There are acupuncture channels that travel from the back of the head, down the neck, and into the traps and shoulder muscles, thereby perfectly traversing the exact same neuromuscular pathways where many people carry tension or experience injuries. By stimulating points along these channels we are able to relax the fibrous tissues in the shortened muscles, which increases circulation and stimulates our natural endocannabinoid system, which decreases pain and inflammation.

How do we treat?

1.

Acupuncture - Sterile, hair-thin, pain-free needles inserted at the sites of pain and/or along its same neuro-muscular pathway to induce the desired analgesic effect. Hypertonic muscles create tense, fibrous tissue that restrict our range of motion, but by relaxing them acupuncture helps them elongate to match their agonist and restore balance.

2.

Motor Points - If our orthopedic assessment determines that your pain is being caused by a particularly weak muscle, OR in the case of exaggerated neurological symptoms, we may use local ELECTRO-ACUPUNCTURE to stimulate the muscles. This involves connecting the handles of our needles to thin wires and inducing a gentle vibrating or tapping sensation along the muscle.

3.

Cupping - Glass or plastic suction cups might be used along tense muscles or adjacent to herniated discs in order to release excess accumulation of nitric oxide, or "qi," as well as help to circulate stagnate blood that could be contributing to inflammation. Cups are left on from 5-10 minutes and the red or purple marks they leave are temporary and not painful.

4.

Tui-Na Massage - This is a complementary modality in our treatment approach, as we do not accept full-length, formal massage appointments. Tui-Na may last anywhere from 1-10 minutes at the beginning or end of our session, with the intention of relaxing the muscles, reinforcing the skeletal integrity and enhancing the effect of the acupuncture when indicated.

5.

Qi Gong - Ultimately, we realize that we are our own best healers, so we love to empower patients by giving them exercises specifically tailored to their condition that they can take home and never need us again. Qi Gong is a form of moving breathing exercise that can rehabilitate our muscles, bones, and ligaments, and reduce systemic inflammation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it hurt?

Acupuncture needles are the thinnest, most gentle needles in the world. Upon insertion you will most likely feel nothing, after which you may or may not feel a slight pressure point or nerve sensation to initiate the body's natural anti-inflammatory mechanism.

What are the needles doing?

When it comes to physical pain, acupuncture excels at either relaxing hypertonic muscles or boosting weaker muscles in a way that then allows the body to heal itself

How long do I have to come to see results?

A standard course of medical treatment for chronic conditions is 12 visits over the course of 2 months. HOWEVER, you may see results as early as the very first week of treatment and absolutely should experience some progress during the first month.

Have you cured this before?

Of course. Every case is different, so there is never any guarantee of results, but this area is one of our specialties in which we've seen consistent improvement as well as full resolutions from consistent acupuncture.

Will I be on a lot of supplements forever?

No. With herbal medicine we try to use the bare minimum to elicit maximum results and do not expect or desire for patients to be reliant on them in perpetuity. The purpose of our supplements is to help reduce inflammation and or regulate neurology to the point that the body no longer needs them.

Are these treatments safe?

Definitely. Acupuncture is considered to be one of the safest modalities in existence, with at worst the very occasional, mild soreness or bruise at the site of a point. As for herbal medicine, although it is BASED ON an ancient Chinese pharmacopeia, the products we actually USE & PRESCRIBE are harvested here in the U.S., mostly in California, Oregon, or upstate New York
